LG's lineup of televisions is receiving a significant boost for music enthusiasts through a free software update. This upgrade, which is available for OLED and QNED models from 2018 upward that run webOS 4.0 or higher, introduces support for Dolby Atmos on Apple Music.

For the first time, this update allows users to access immersive audio experiences directly through their LG televisions without the need for additional hardware. To encourage users to explore this new feature, LG is offering a 3-month free trial of Apple Music, during which Dolby Atmos-enabled tracks will be distinctly marked.

While many LG models already support Dolby Atmos through their built-in speakers, LG advises that connecting to an external sound system, such as an LG soundbar, can significantly improve the audio quality. This is particularly effective even if the TV itself does not natively support Dolby Atmos. It's likely that other brands' Dolby Atmos-compatible soundbars and speakers will also work, although this has not been officially confirmed.

This update essentially eliminates the need for additional Apple hardware to enjoy Dolby Atmos with Apple Music. With this new capability directly built into LG TVs, other TV brands may also start to include Dolby Atmos support in their Apple Music applications. We’ll have to wait and see.
