Samsung is exploring the potential of 3D technology in the gaming world with its latest innovation, the Odyssey 3D monitor, showcased at Gamescom in Germany. Unlike traditional 3D viewing, which required glasses and never really took off, Samsung's new monitor aims to deliver a glasses-free 3D experience specifically for PC gamers.

The Odyssey 3D monitor is equipped with a "lenticular lens" on the front panel, which is designed to create a 3D effect by presenting slightly different images to each eye, simulating depth. This effect is enhanced by a pair of cameras that track the user's eye movements, allowing the monitor to adjust the displayed images in real-time using Samsung's "View Mapping" technology. For those who prefer standard viewing, the monitor can easily switch back to a traditional 2D display on its 4K panel.

Samsung first introduced the Odyssey 3D concept at CES 2024, and its appearance at Gamescom indicates the company is moving closer to bringing this technology to the market. The Odyssey 3D is expected to be available in both 27-inch and 37-inch models, featuring a 1ms gray-to-gray (GTG) response time and a 165Hz refresh rate for smooth and responsive gameplay. However, Samsung has not yet disclosed a release date or pricing information for the monitor.

This development suggests Samsung is seriously considering the viability of 3D technology in gaming, though it remains to be seen how well the Odyssey 3D will be received by the gaming community.
