Nest Unveils 4th-Gen Learning Thermostat with AI Enhancements
Nest has finally announced the launch of its fourth-generation Learning Thermostat, which incorporates new AI technology designed to improve user interaction and energy efficiency. The updated model is priced at $279.99 and is available for preorder starting today and will begin shipping on August 20. The new thermostat comes in three color options: Polished Silver, Polished Obsidian, and Polished Gold. Included in the box is one remote room temperature sensor.
The latest Nest Learning Thermostat continues to build on the learning capabilities introduced with the original model in 2012. It tracks your temperature preferences throughout the day and adjusts based on your habits. The new AI feature allows the thermostat to check in with you before making schedule changes, offering suggestions that you can approve or modify. This ensures that the thermostat adapts more accurately to your routine, including any unexpected changes like coming home earlier than usual.
Supporting up to six Nest Temperature Sensors, the fourth-generation thermostat can average the temperature readings from all connected sensors to maintain the desired comfort level in your home. Additional sensors are priced at $39.99 each, with a three-pack available for $99.99.
The new model aims to optimize energy usage by considering outdoor conditions. For instance, it can reduce heating on sunny winter afternoons, allowing natural sunlight to warm your home. The Smart Ventilation feature works with compatible home ventilation systems to manage indoor air quality, drawing in fresh air when conditions are favorable or relying on internal air circulation when necessary. Nest’s Adaptive Eco feature dynamically calculates energy usage and adjusts the thermostat settings to minimize energy consumption while you’re away. This helps prevent high energy use when you return home, balancing savings and comfort.
There's also a System Health Monitor that alerts you to potential issues with your HVAC system, such as inefficiencies or the need for maintenance. It can notify you if your system isn't performing as expected, prompting you to check for common issues like open windows or doors.
Design-wise, the new Nest Learning Thermostat features a sleek look with a 60% larger, curved LCD display that minimizes bezel visibility. The domed design is reminiscent of the Pixel Watch 2. The customizable home screen allows users to personalize the display to match their home decor. An updated Soli radar sensor adjusts the information displayed based on your distance from the thermostat, providing clear, concise information from afar and more detailed data up close. This sensor also enhances the accuracy of the home and away features.
