Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has introduced what it calls its "most advanced AR glasses," named Orion. These augmented reality glasses have been in development for five years and are designed to resemble ordinary eyewear, while offering cutting-edge AR capabilities. Unlike virtual reality headsets that immerse users in a fully digital environment, Orion overlays digital elements onto the real world, allowing users to interact with both simultaneously. Meta emphasizes that the glasses are lightweight and suitable for use both indoors and outdoors.

One standout feature of Orion is its built-in contextual AI, which can understand the wearer's surroundings and predict their needs. For instance, the AI can suggest a recipe based on the contents of your fridge or help you make a phone call while you’re busy with household tasks. Although Orion isn’t intended for the general public just yet, it’s not merely an experimental prototype either. Meta is offering the glasses to its employees and select users for testing purposes, gathering data to refine and improve future consumer versions.

Meta's long-term vision for Orion includes improving the AR display to make visuals clearer, refining the design to be even slimmer, and finding ways to produce the glasses at scale to make them more accessible and affordable. These developments are part of Meta's broader efforts to bring advanced AR technology into everyday life.
