During its WWDC 2024 keynote, Apple showcased iPadOS 18, offering a sneak peek into the upcoming tablet software. The update introduces several new features, including a built-in calculator and enhanced AI capabilities like ChatGPT integration with Siri. The update is set to release in the fall, with a developer beta available now and a public beta coming next month.

One of the most anticipated additions is a built-in calculator, eliminating the need for third-party apps. The new calculator also supports Apple Pencil, allowing users to solve math problems by writing them out with the stylus.

iPadOS 18 also introduces Smart Script, a feature in the Notes app that enhances the appearance of handwritten text using machine learning. It can replicate your handwriting style, perform spell checks, and convert typed text into your own handwriting.

The update will include the new “Passwords” app and several features from iOS 18. These features offer new ways to personalize the home screen, integrate third-party apps into the Control Center, and apply dark mode to app icons.

iMessage is getting updates, too, including the ability to schedule messages and use any emoji as a Tapback reaction. Privacy controls will allow users to hide apps.

Other notable features include a screen-sharing capability in SharePlay, redesigned Settings and Photos apps, and a customizable floating tab for easier app navigation.

iPadOS 18 brings numerous AI-powered enhancements to Apple's tablets. Users can access ChatGPT through Siri without needing an account. Siri will also be able to answer more questions and perform tasks like proofreading and text summarizing across apps.

This preview comes shortly after Apple updated its iPad lineup with new models, including an M4-powered iPad Pro and an M2-powered iPad Air. The Pro models now feature OLED displays, and the iPad Air is available in 11- and 13-inch sizes. Both new models, along with several older ones, will be compatible with iPadOS 18 at launch.
