Apple is now issuing compensation checks to customers affected by malfunctioning butterfly keyboards in certain MacBook models. This development marks the conclusion of a prolonged issue that affected Mac laptops produced between 2015 and 2019, where users experienced problems with stuck or unusable keys.

These payments stem from a $50 million class action settlement that Apple agreed to in 2022. Individuals who submitted claims during the designated period, which began late last year, are receiving payments ranging from $50 to $395, based on the extent and frequency of the keyboard repairs. In June, a court mandated that Apple start the payout process.

The problematic butterfly switch keyboards, known for their minimal key travel but high susceptibility to malfunction, were gradually phased out starting with the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro. Apple ultimately resolved the issue with the introduction of a 13-inch MacBook Pro in 2020 that featured a more reliable keyboard design.
